Sir
I receiv'd a letter from you in yr ship the Thistle
Capt Reid and I have contributed pritty largely towards the loading
of her and the small acquaintance I had with you in Potom=
ack and the good Character you wear in those parts hath encour=
ag'd me to Consign you [omission in text]
hhds. of my tobo -- Which I desire you
will make the most of you Can for my advantage An Early sale
and an entire Accot to let me know what I am to have for it will be
the most Satisfactory way you can take to Oblige me Who am

Robert Carter generally used a return address of "Rappahannock" for the river on which he lived rather than "Corotoman," the name of his home, on his correspondence, especially to merchants abroad. The county and colony have been added for clarity.
[1] Merchant James Buchanan (d. 1742) had run his business from Biddeford and Topsham, Devonshire, but he later moved it to London. ( The Directory Containing an Alphabetical List of the Names & Places of Abode of the Directors of Companies, Persons in Publick Business, Merchants and other Eminent traders in the Cities of london and Westminster and Bororugh of Southwark.
