Robert Carter writes a hurried note to Glasgow merchant Andrew Ramsay, August 9, 1728, to report that he has received an account of the sales of 2 hogsheads of tobacco and receipt of 4 more, but believes he has sent 4 additional. He will write more politely the next time.

Mr. Andrew Ramsay
Sir --
This comes by Captain Sharp have received your
Accot: of my 2 hogsheads and also your Acknowledgement of yor: receipt
of 4 more complaining of a very dull market our Commodity
was under I am not Certain but according to my present thoughts there
is 4 hogsheads more gone to you from Potomac this Spring I have not
time now to Satisfy my Self of the Contents of your Letters or of
my own from Potomac am in hurry and Sharp in mighty
haste Therefore desire you will Excuse my abruptness at this time
In my next will Endeavor to be more Considerate I am

Robert Carter generally used a return address of "Rappahannock" for the river on which he lived rather than "Corotoman," the name of his home, on his correspondence, especially to merchants abroad. The county and colony have been added for clarity.
