Robert Carter writes a hurried note to Glasgow merchant Andrew Ramsay, August 9, 1728, to report that he has received an account of the sales of 2 hogsheads of tobacco and receipt of 4 more, but believes he has sent 4 additional. He will write more politely the next time.

Mr. Andrew Ramsey
Sir --
This comes by Capt: Sharp have rec'd your
Accot: of my 2 hogsheads and also your Acknewledgemt. of yor: receipt
of 4 more complaining of a very dull market our Commodity
was under I am not Certain but according to my present thots: there
is 4 hogsheads more gon to you from Patowmack this Spring I have not
time now to Satisfye my Self of the Contents of your Letters or of
my own from Patowmack am in hurry and Sharp in mighty
hast Therefore desire you will Excuse my abruptness at this time
In my next will Endeavr. to be more Considerate I am

Robert Carter generally used a return address of "Rappahannock" for the river on which he lived rather than "Corotoman," the name of his home, on his correspondence, especially to merchants abroad. The county and colony have been added for clarity.
