May it please yor. Honr. --
Yesterday in the Afternoon the Enclosed
Packet from the Govr. of Maryland
in its worn Condition
came to my hands Yesterday at four a Clock in the
Afternoon
relateing to a robbery Committed in this governmt. by Some
Inhabitants of Maryland I thought it my Duty to Send it by
Express to your honour Mr. Randolph
the Kings Attorney was
advised with upon this Affair and directed the process he is ac
quainted with the Case what Determination you will please to
come to upon it I must Submit to your Determination I am
with all Dutifull respects Sir

Robert Carter Letter Book, 1727 April 13-1728 July 23, Carter Family Papers, Virginia Historical Society, Richmond. There is a 19th-century transcript of the letter in the Minor-Blackford Papers, James Monroe Law Office and Museum, Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Robert Carter generally used a return address of "Rappahannock" for the river on which he lived rather than "Corotoman," the name of his home, on his correspondence, especially to merchants abroad. The county and colony have been added for clarity to the heading on the draft.
