Robert Carter writes to Benedict Leonard Calvert, September 21, 1727, to inform him that William Gooch has arrived in Virginia and assumed his post as governor, and that Calvert's "packet" has been sent on to Gooch.

Province of Maryland
Sir --
The honor of your Letter of the 22d: Ultimo relating to Thacker
came to my hands yesterday at four o'clock in the Afternoon, Our
Governor Gooch
Arrived at Williamsburg the 8th: Instant Published his
Commission the 11th: and proclaimed King George
the Second the Same day
which put an End to my Administration I Shall think it my
Duty forthwith by Express to Send away your Excellencys packet
to our Governor and having an Opportunity to Potomac river

have Acted in it, what proceedings our Governor may take in the Affair
I cannot determine I heartily wish your Excellency happy in
your Government and am

Robert Carter Letter Book, 1727 April 13-1728 July 23, Carter Family Papers, Virginia Historical Society, Richmond. There is a 19th-century transcript of the letter in the Minor-Blackford Papers, James Monroe Law Office and Museum, Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Robert Carter generally used a return address of "Rappahannock" for the river on which he lived rather than "Corotoman," the name of his home, on his correspondence, especially to persons outside Virginia. The county and colony have been added for clarity to the heading on the draft.
