Letter from Robert Carter to Captain James Christian, September 7, 1727

     Robert Carter writes to Captain James Christian, master of the slave ship Rose, September 7, 1727, that he has had two letters from the ship's owner, merchant John Pemberton of Liverpool, and that he will assist in the sale of the slaves. He notes the large numbers of slaves that have arrived in the colony this year.

Sepr: the. 7th: 1727


     I had two Letters Concerning you from Mr.
Pemberton
one Dated the 31st. of October the other the 15th: of December in which
he tells me of you and your ship being gone to Guinea and bound
for Virginia and if you fixed at Rappahannock I am to have the preference of
selling the Slaves if I will take the trouble upon me whether it will
be best for you to come here or to go further it is impossible for me
to Conjecture it Seems one half of your Cargo is Boys and Girls
and your men but few if you come here I will do the best I can
for you you have [heard] by this Time what abundance of Negroes

have been imported this year into this river we have had above
Six hundred and into York I believe more than three Times as many
I think there is no great doubt at your Loading your Ship with
new Tobacco I have discoursed your Mate at large to whom Shall
refer you
