     Robert Carter writes a power of attorey to George Eskridge, August 25, 1727, to empower him to collect quit rents due from William Robinson in the counties of Stafford and King George, taking Robinson to the county courts and to the General Court if necessary.

Augst: the 25th. 1727


Sir --

     Mr. James Carter and Mr. Charles Brent
long Since my Collecrs. in Stafford and King George Countys long Since
have informd me that they have Several times demanded of Colonel
William Robinson of King George County the Quit rents due
to me out of his Lands that he holds in them two Countys and
upon much demand hath and doth Still refuse to pay in Sterling
money according to the Conditions of his Grants or in Tobbo: at the
rate of a penny per pound I do therefore hereby desire & Empower
you to make one demand more of the Said Colonel Robinson for the
rents of his Lands as beforesaid and if he Still refuses to make
Immediate payment of his Said rents as aforesaid to desire and Empower
you forthwith as my Atturney to prosecute in my name and
Stead the Said Robinson to the Law In either or both of the Said Countys
of Stafford and King George Hereby Giving you full power and
Authority to do all lawfull act & acts thing and things for the recovery
of my Said rents as I my Self might or Could do where [sic ] I present

present ratifying allowing and Confirming whatsoever you
Shall do in or about the Premises And it is my further Order that
the Judgemt. of either of the said Courts should go against me which
I cannot apprehend that you Appeal to the General Court In
Wittness of the Premises I have hereunto Set my hand &
Seal this 25th: day of Augst: 1727

[1] James Carter (1684-1743), of Stafford County, was the younger brother of Carter's dear friend and associate, Captain Thomas Carter of Lancaster County, and was one of Carter's chief managers. ( Joseph Lyon Miller, "Captain Thomas Carter and His Descendants," William and Mary Quarterly. 1st ser., 17(1908-09): 275-285. )

[2] Charles Brent (ca. 1695-1756) of Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, married to Hannah Innes. He acted as collector of quit rents for Carter in the county. Lucy Jane Brent Palmer. [4]Quit rent was the term used for "a (usually small) rent paid by a freeholder . . . in lieu of services which might otherwise be required; a nominal rent paid (esp. in former British colonial territories to the Crown) as an acknowledgement of tenure," in this case, to the proprietors of the Northern Neck.
