Robert Carter writes to his grandson, Lewis Burwell, August 22, 1727, then at school (Eton) in England, to chastise him lovingly for his lack of attention to his studies and to express his hope that Lewis will become more diligent as his last letter stated.

     I rec'd your Letter wherein you desire to Continue
at School a year longer to Qualifye your Self the better for the University
^{(in which wee Complyd )} promising how good a Boy you wold be in following your learning ^Studys
I pray God grant that you may at length leave your follys and
take to your learning to better purpose then you have hitherto
done Your Father was a worthy good man and Sent you for England
on purpose to make you a Scholar and a Gentleman what a
trouble will it be to you when you come to years of discretion
to Consider what little benifit you have reaped for large Expenses
that have bin bestowd upon you I must tell you in all the Letters I
have recd from all your friends in England no one Speaks a wd
in your praise which is a very great trouble to all your relations
here. It will be a very great Comfort to them to hear better things
