Summary
Letter from Robert Carter to John King, August 26, 1723
Robert Carter writes to Bristol merchant John King, August 26, 1723, adding to a security copy of an earlier letter (1723 July 25) a further order for nails and agreeing to pay for the freight as he needs the goods so badly. He reports the damage to crops from recent bad weather that will reduce the expected crop to about half of what was expected.

The above is a copy,
I am in such want of the above
things that I must have them Although I'm forcd to pay Freight For thm.
but I hope you'l make it as Easie as You can I would have You add to the

ails 10 m 8d. more & 10 m 10 d,
I need not Entertain You with the great destruction of our
Crops by the voilent [sic
]
Rains & winds that we have had this two months
together, We reckon not above half will be made that was Expectd.
& to be sure will not be good. Your Master's Relation of the matter
will obtain the most Credit with You so I wave It & am,
Sir Yor. humble Servt.

Robert Carter generally used a return address of "Rappahannock" for the river on which he lived rather than "Corotoman," the name of his home, on his correspondence, especially to merchants abroad. The county and colony have been added for clarity to the heading on the draft.
[1] Carter refers to his letter to King of July 25, 1723,
which his clerk did not copy again in the letter book at this point as there already was a copy in it which the clerk could find and copy when preparing the copies to be sent..
