Summary

Letter from Robert Carter to Micajah Perry, August [3-8,1723]

Robert Carter writes to London merchant Micajah Perry, August [3-8, 1723], about a bill of exchange payable to John Bagg he has drawn on the account of his late son-in-law, Nathaniel Burwell, in which his other son-in-law, Mann Page, will join him in signing. He refers to an annuity he has offered the merchant, and notes that if Perry will not accept it, he thinks he will write to soon to direct Perry to use the cash to buy bank stock.

NOTES

Source copy consulted: Robert Carter letter book, 1723 June 16-1724 April 23, Robert Carter Papers (acc. no. 3807), Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library, University of Virginia. The corner of the letter book page has been torn off after the month, and the dates 3-8 and year 1723 have been supplied as this letter stands in the letterbook between letters dated the 3rd and the 8th in that year.

Robert Carter generally used a return address of "Rappahannock" for the river on which he lived rather than "Corotoman," the name of his home, on his correspondence, especially to merchants abroad. The county and colony have been added for clarity.

Carter added the closing in his hand to the clerk's draft as the use of italics indicates.

[1] This probably was John Bagge (1682?-1726), rector of St. Anne's Parish, Essex County, 1709-1711 and 1718-1726. He had served Sittenburne Parish in Richmond County, 1711-1716. ( John K. Nelson. A Blessed Company: Parishes, Parsons, and Parishoners in Anglican Virginia, 1690-1776. [Chapel Hill and London: University of North Carolina Press, 2001]. p. 304. )

[2] Carter gave the captain's first name in his diary on January 19, 1727 .

[3] Captain Samuel Bowman commanded the Lucia. Carter mentioned this vessel in his diary in June 1724, and again on March 4, 1726, when he wrote that she "came in had 20 Weeks Passage."
