Robert Carter writes to Liverpool merchant John Pemberton, July 4 and 6, 1723, to alert him to a number of bills of exchange drawn on him, and to cover an invoice (not present) for goods. Carter notes that he has not determined if the last shipment of shoes is as good as those of the previous year; he orders more which he asks Pemberton to have made for him. He closes by informing Pemberton that he will ship 40 or 50 hogsheads of tobacco on board the Vine . In a post script dated July 6th, Carter reports his shipment of 40 hogsheads.

     This serves to advise you of some drafts I made
on you the 12th of last Month to Mr. Jno. Holloway to wit
one bill for :100£ one Do for 90£ one Do for 82£
in all Amounting to 272£ which must request you
to answer at time, I drew on you for 78£ 13 S: 8 d of
which have already given advice.

     Herein I send a Invoice for some Goods
some what less then I had from you last Year
the Shooes I have not yet seen if they prove as good
as them you sent me the Year before I shall not complain
I pray your uttmost care in the buying of these and that
they be made on purpose for me, I now send you two
small bills of Exchange Wm. Pain on Jos. Clegg

     I am shipping upon Watkinson 40 or 50 hhds. more
of Strip'd leaf Strait laid Tobbo., my own Crop part of it already
