Letter from Robert Carter to John Pemberton, September 20,1720
Robert Carter writes a brief note to Liverpool merchant JohnPemberton, September 20, 1720, by a passing Liverpool ship to send asmall bill of exchange and report that Enoch Robinson, captain of theMermaid,
will soon be down the river with 20hogsheads of Carter'stobacco on board. He mentions the good crop of tobacco in thecolony.

Robert Carter generally used a return address of"Rappahannock" for the river on which he lived rather than"Corotoman," the name of his home, on his correspondence, especiallyto merchants abroad. The county and colony have been added forclarity.
[1] Pemberton was a Liverpool merchant.
[2] Robinson was captain of the Mermaid,
