Letter from Robert Carter to William Pawley, 1720 July13

     Robert Carter writes to merchant William Pawley, July 13, 1720,thanking him for his offer of service to Carter, and commenting that"Yor. Sales of my several Parcells of Tobo. hath bin so mean & sovery much to my dammage discourages me from trying Yor. Markett anymore till I am Sattisfyed Yor. Port will afford me as much for myGoods as other places." He reports a bill of exchange he has drawn onPawley to Edmund Jenings, and gently chides Pawley for not giving himthe discount on dutys which he asks Pawley to reconsider.

Mr Wm. Pawley

Sir --

     I rec'd Yors. of the 5th. ofOctr. wherein You advise
me ofthe paymt . of my bills and that You'lbe always ready
to Ansr. wth. Punctuallity where You haveEffects, a peice
of Generosity wch. I always believed You'd never deny.

     Yor. Sales of my several Parcells of Tobo. hath bin so
mean & so very much tomy dammage discoura-
=ges me from trying Yor. Markett any more till I am --
Sattisfyed [sic] Yor. Port will afford me as much for my Goods as other
places. I reckonYou in my debt £50 odd pound wch.
hath Encourag'd me to draw on Youlately a bill of Excha:
Payable to Edmund Jennings Esq for£50 giving you
the time of Sixty Days to pay It in wch. I hope You'l do
wth. all Due honr. -- --

     I cant forbear observing to You in Yor. accot. of sales
You put all the Dutys intoone article in wch. If I mistake
not You have given me noadvantage of any of
The Discounts whether It be right or no I Submitt to
Yor. Consideration &remain

Robert Carter generally used a return address of"Rappahannock" for the river on which he lived rather than"Corotoman," the name of his home, on his correspondence, especiallyto merchants abroad. The county and colony have been added forclarity.
