     Benjamin Graves writes to Robert Carter, July 4, 1709, from"Hobb's Hole" that he is sending a bundle of iron and a "pump Spear"and that he is sending men for the shallop which he hopes is ready;he requests Carter "to load her at your own house."

     The bearer brings A bundle of Iron Work RC. 16 [identification mark]
& A pump Spear Which is all of yours, I send men for
the Shallop I hope she is now done; beplesed to load
her at your own house, hoping you with family Are
in health, I conclude with myhumble Service I am

[1] Benjamin and Adam (d. 1726) Graves were the sonsof Captain Thomas Graves, long a captain of vessels trading toVirginia, and a special friend of RC; they also commanded vessels inthe trade.
