Long before George Washington crossed the Delaware, Robert “King" Carter was born at Corotoman here in Lancaster County on Virginia’s Northern Neck. Carter, who died the same year (1732) Washington was born, was one of the wealthiest and most influential planters in colonial Virginia. He built Christ Church at his own expense, now considered one of the most finely crafted examples of Georgian architecture in colonial Virginia.
Today, bicyclists travel the back roads that Carter, Washington, Monroe, Madison, and other Virginia notables once journeyed on horseback. This off-the-beaten-track peninsula, located between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers, offers more than 6,500 acres of natural areas and 1,200 miles of shoreline.
From bird watchers to boating enthusiasts, visitors are drawn to the Northern Neck as a destination for those who enjoy small-town hospitality, boutique shopping, a variety of restaurants, world class seafood, and spectacular scenery. Charming bed and breakfasts and a world-class resort just a few miles from Christ Church offer distinctive accommodations along picturesque creeks or in small towns. Signature events, such as the Irvington Farmers Market held on the first Saturday of each month from May through November, and the Historic Christ Church & Museum Craft Beer Fest every summer, are fun-filled family events with live music and good eats.
